Change Climate Project: Reduction action plan tool

Enabling companies to create, manage, and track progress on carbon reduction plans.
Product Design (Web)

 Project details

  • Design team of one, collaborating closely with PM, emissions & reductions subject matter expert, and two engineers.

Responsible for defining user workflows that met product requirements and desired business logic, creating visual design treatments and contributing to shared design system/component library, and providing context and design feedback to developers

  • The Change Climate Project (formerly Climate Neutral) is a nonprofit organization working to eliminate carbon emissions, namely through providing carbon emissions measurement and reduction planning tools, as well as certification, to retail goods manufacturers.

  • Part of The Change Climate Project certification process requires their partner brands to submit reduction action plans (RAPs) that describe the specific efforts they’re undergoing to reduce the carbon emissions in their operations, as well as overall reduction targets for how much of their emissions they are aiming to eliminate within a specific timeframe. For example, a brand may choose to set a goal to replace all their packaging with sustainable options in 2024, and commit to reducing their overall emissions 50% by 2030.

The goal of this project was to make that process — formerly a tedious cycle of emails, phone calls, meetings, and edits — into a web-based flow. An added benefit would be that, by providing common templates for reduction action plans, brands would be able to more quickly choose plans and The Change Climate Project would be able to see trends across their brand portfolio more easily with more uniform data.

    • 5% increase in plan velocity: Reduction action plans set in 1H 2023 (2 years spent in progress) are at 79% progress, whereas plans set in 1H 2022 or earlier have an average completion of 74% after 2 years in progress

    • Almost 2x plan completion: 84% of RAPs that have been set using new flow are complete, compared to 49% of RAPs using old flow

    • Increased action plan quality: team estimates a 40% increase on plan approval at first submission (no edits needed)

    • Improved, scalable business operations: time to certify decreased by estimated 20+ minutes per brand because of reduction in rounds of feedback for action plans
